Two Messages from
Charles G. Finney and Charles H. Spurgeon
for Today

Without question among Nineteenth Century preachers and revivalists, Charles G. Finney was America’s greatest revivalist and Charles H. Spurgeon was England’s greatest preacher. Both men led thousands to faith in Jesus Christ during their lifetimes, and both men influence Christian preachers, revivalists, and theologians today. These two great Bible expositors can be studied together by reading their sermons on the same Biblical themes in the Finney and Spurgeon Face to Face Series.

The student of the Bible and the student of great preaching will gain much from these two masters of the pulpit and Bible interpretation. A sermon by Finney and and a sermon by Spurgeon are included in each of the books below, and they have been only lightly edited by L.G. Parkhurst in order to put them in the same format for easy reading by today's reader, Bible student, and Bible teacher. The messages of both remain unchanged for your comparison and study of the technique and method of these two acclaimed and effective preachers of God's Word.

Charles Grandison Finney [1792-1875] has been considered America’s Greatest Revivalist. He also served as theological professor and president of Oberlin College, Oberlin, Ohio, which he helped found in 1833. In 1980, L.G. Parkhurst began publishing the works of Charles Finney beginning with Principles of Prayer through Bethany House Publishers. More recently he has published Finney’s works through Agion Press, beginning with Principles of Righteousness.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon [1834-1892] has been considered the Prince of Preachers. He founded Spurgeon’s College in 1856 in London, England, which was named after him following his death. Through Bethany House Publishers in 1988, L.G. Parkhurst published The Believer’s Secret on Intercession, a devotional from the writings of Andrew Murray and C.H. Spurgeon.

The New Finney's Principles Series

Charles G. Finney’s Principles of Righteousness: Finney’s Lessons on Romans, Volume I, began the new “Finney’s Principles” series, which commenced more than thirty years ago with the first book in the series Principles of Prayer, published by Bethany House Publishers in 1980. No one knew at the time that Finney’s lectures and sermons in this series would become immensely popular. Of course, many devoted Christians promoted Finney’s teachings. Finney’s inspired preaching eventually led him to be named “America’s Greatest Revivalist.” He inspired Christians all around the world to live totally for Jesus Christ. Most of the revivals that followed Finney’s successful endeavors relied either directly or indirectly on the principles and theology that Finney used and taught, especially in his Lectures on Revivals of Religion. Countless evangelists and preachers have been influenced by his methods and Biblical teaching.

Finney’s sermons or lessons on the Book of Romans show how he drew his theological teachings from the Bible, and how he related his theology to his preaching in a very effective manner. His sermons reached the average person in the pew; while Finney’s Systematic Theology primarily reached college students and professors, ministers and preachers. In Finney’s publication of his Systematic Theology, he never completed the first volume, which would have revealed the main points of historic, Biblical Christianity that all true Christians believed in his day. He intended to publish the first volume last, because he believed that otherwise he would only be publishing what everyone already knew and believed. Because his intention to publish the first volume last (which he did not live long enough to do) has not been widely understood (and in some cases purposely ignored), Finney’s Christian and ethical ideas have been misunderstood and sometimes purposely misrepresented. For example, he has been accused of legalism, of preaching a religion of works, of perfectionism, and of not giving enough honor to the work of the Holy Spirit in the conversion of sinners. The first volume of Finney's Systematic Theology would have refuted these criticisms. If Finney’s Lessons on Romans are carefully studied the reader will see many of the ways Finney’s critics have been in error. This three volume work of Finney’s Lessons on Romans will partially answer many questions about Finney’s true beliefs, and hopefully silence some of his critics.

A Message from the Compiler and Editor: "From time to time during the last thirty years, since the beginning of the "Finney's Principles" series, some have asked me how I have used what I have learned from Finney in my preaching and Bible teaching. The best way to learn the answer to this question is to read the many weekly Bible Lessons that I have published in The Oklahoman newspaper for more than twenty-five years. For the past few years, I have published these International Bible Lessons and the International Bible Lessons Commentary on the International Bible Lessons Commentary website and the International Bible Lesson Forum website. These Bible Lessons are based on the Uniform Lesson Series and are used by teachers and students in many different Christian denominations around the world. To learn how Finney’s ethical and life-transforming teachings can be applied today, see my books, Prayer Steps to Serenity The Twelve Steps Journey: New Serenity Prayer Edition or Prayer Steps to Serenity: Daily Quiet Time Edition. May God bless your continuing study of His word! L.G. Parkhurst, Jr.

The new “Finney’s Principles” series includes a Study Guide of 10 questions for individual study or group discussion on each lesson or sermon and a Commentary by Henry Cowles, a professor with Charles Finney at Oberlin College. To learn more about Finney’s Principles, visit FinneysPrinciples.com.

Prayer Steps to Serenity: Daily Quiet Time Edition

The daily readings reveal some of the Biblical truths found in the Twelve Steps without directly working through a traditional Twelve Steps Program. Taken from Prayer Steps to Serenity The Twelve Steps Journey: New Serenity Prayer Edition, the new Prayer Steps to Serenity: Daily Quiet Time Edition does not include a specific recovery program. As a gift book for someone in denial or needing to work the Twelve Steps, it offers a gentle and subtle introduction to a condensed version of the Twelve Steps. Prayer Steps to Serenity: Daily Quiet Time Edition takes the reader through steps from hopelessness to hope, identifying needs and the One who can supply the greatest need. The lessons mirror a time when people who believed in God did not have volumns of instruction on walking with God, but walked with Him in the present moment.

Francis and Edith Schaeffer:
Expanded and Updated Edition

Francis Schaeffer defined revival as a: “A return to the practice of Biblical Christianity in the power of the Holy Spirit.” During his ministry, supported faithfully by his wife, Edith, they experienced revival in their personal lives and among the people with whom they ministered and worked. Those who practiced their teachings from the Scriptures also experienced revival and spread that revival to their own families and churches. Edith first wrote L’Abri, about their work in Switzerland, and later wrote their autobiography, The Tapestry. Her two books, and this introduction to their life and work by L.G. Parkhurst, Jr., show how God worked to enlighten and transform a whole generation of Christians. Francis and Edith Schaeffer were Christian missionaries who challenged a world of skeptical people to rethink their beliefs. Francis and Edith Schaeffer: Expanded and Updated Edition includes revisions, revised chapters from Francis Schaeffer: the Man and His Message (also written by L.G. Parkhurst, Jr.), and new material; see especially, "Lessons from Their Lives of Faith.” In this short biography, you will be introduced to Francis and Edith Schaeffer and encouraged to learn more about them and their work by reading their books and discussing with others. The author, L.G. Parkhurst, Jr., met Francis and Edith Schaeffer in 1978, when they travelled to Rochester, Minnesota for treatment of Francis Schaeffer's cancer. He contributed to Francis A. Schaeffer: Portraits of the Man and His Work, edited by Lane T. Dennis, and he wrote Francis Schaeffer: the Man and His Message.

How God Teaches Us to Pray:
Lessons from the Lives of Francis and Edith Schaeffer

In How God Teaches Us to Pray, we can learn how to draw closer to God and pray more effectively as we learn lessons from Francis and Edith Schaeffer and how God taught them to pray.  In 1955, Francis and Edith Schaeffer founded L'Abri Fellowship in Switzerland to demonstrate the reality of God through prayer. God so blessed their work that they began writing their many books in the 1960’s. Because of the wide circulation of Dr. Francis Schaeffer’s books in several foreign languages, many people associate their work only with logical arguments for God’s existence, with honest answers to honest questions, and with good reasons to be a Christian. However, time and again Dr. Schaeffer said that his books did not stand alone: they stood with those of his wife’s. Edith Schaeffer’s books show the existence of God through answers to prayer and transformed lives. She wrote about the founding of L'Abri and told how they based their work on prayer. They prayed for God to send the people of His choice to them; they prayed for God to send the money they needed without soliciting for funds; they prayed for God to give them His direct leading and plan; and they prayed for God to send the co-workers of His choice. Through daily prayer and God's provision in answer to prayer, they intended to manifest the presence of God to those around them, especially to unbelievers. Francis Schaeffer never wrote a book on prayer, but he did preach on prayer. When we read the letters of Francis Schaeffer beginning in the 1950’s, we see the great importance he placed on prayer and reading devotional books (especially in the young Christian’s life) for spiritual growth and renewal. From Edith Schaeffer’s “letters home from Europe” and later from her “L'Abri Family Letters,” from her books L’Abri and The Tapestry, from her books on various subjects, and through her and Fran’s personal ministry, we have a record of many answers to their prayers and a wealth of information from which to select some of the best examples and applications for this devotional book on prayer. The devotional readings in this book will both instruct and inspire your prayer life.

Prayer Steps to Christmas: Daily Quiet Time Edition

During the Advent and Christmas season, Prayer Steps to Christmas: Daily Quiet Time Edition will help you keep your heart and mind focused on Jesus Christ and what the Bible teaches about His birth and the meaning of His coming into the world. You will also learn more about the meaning of His coming into your life, if you will open your heart and invite Him to reign in the center of your life as you learn more about what He wants to do within you. One Prayer Step at a time, the thirty-one daily meditations and prayers can be read in the morning or evening, at the table before or after a meal, during family devotions, or at the beginning or close of a group Bible study or Sunday school class. To help those who do not have their Bible close at hand, in the back of this book you will find the records of Jesus’ birth as told in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. The verses from these two books of the Bible have been put into a possible chronological order for a “Harmony of the Gospels;” so you can read the incidents surrounding Jesus’ birth in the possible chronological order of events.
